"The Nashville Drummer" is a collection of eight original tunes featuring one of today’s premiere drummers and singer-songwriters, John “Hound” Brown . Each song features traditional drum set notation (often used by jazz drummers) and the Nashville Number System (used by professional session players in studios all over the world). MISSION STATEMENT Laying it down. The Groove. This is the Art of Drumming. The simple truth is that while it takes a lifetime to master anything, what we as professional drummers do is actually much simpler than what you may suspect. We often say “Less is More.” Whether on the road, in the studio or creating music, all modern music requires us to play fundamentally the same things over and over. There are a handful of grooves we use the vast majority of the time in today’s popular music, regardless of genre. The magic lies in how we deliver those grooves and infuse them with our individual unique style. The smallest things affect those grooves: hi-hat movement, ghost notes on the snare, space, laying back on the snare or playing on the edge of the beat, and so on.

This is my toolbox. I bring this basic knowledge to every situation yet remain open to altering it. In today’s musical landscape you MUST be a Chameleon. Be able to play all styles to some level of proficiency and mix them up so you can quickly adapt to any given situation. People listen to a variety of music that is interconnected in one way or another. Hip-Hop and loop-generated music has permeated every aspect of all genres. Country has affected rock, pop has changed country and swing is used in every genre.

For the majority of your playing career, most of what you will play is going to be in 4/4 time and some form of a straight-ahead, basic rock-pop-country groove. All commercial music and radio dictates this . They are the most popular tunes.

It all starts with you. The drummer. You are the foundation. You’re the pitcher & the catcher, the quarterback and the center. When you sit on that drum throne, pick up those sticks and count it off, you’re the captain of the ship. Learn to LISTEN. Trust your instincts. Play with your heart, first. Own the song.

For those that love a groove, this book was written for you.

- John "Hound" Brown

ABOUT THE COMPOSER
Born into the chaos of the mid 60’s and torn between the unyielding philosophies of the Bible Belt, the spirituality of the civil rights movement and the idealism of the hippie culture, John Brown a.k.a. ‘Hound’ is part classic storyteller, part southern medicine man...an artist who plants a musical landscape influenced by Jackson Browne & Little Feat, Jimmy Buffet and Mark Twain, Lyle Lovett and the Bible.

Raised on the tobacco roads of eastern North Carolina, John has toured, written, and recorded music with a who’s who of major recording artists, producers and songwriters, including John Berry, Martina McBride, Billy Dean, Susie Boggus, John Hiatt and the Zac Brown Band. Already a respected Nashville musician, John sowed the first seeds of his unique artistic identity with his 2003 recording, Next of Kin. That same year he co-wrote the hit musical, The Bell Witch, which was nominated for the 2004 Benois De La Danse awards held at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. John’s latest marquis success, the song “Real Things,” co-written with country artist Billy Dean; is the title track of Joe Nichols’ 2007 Universal South major release. Maybe it’s Jackson Browne going country, Jimmy Buffet hitting land or Mark Twain moving to the farm with Foghorn Leghorn... a virtual BBQ-Baptist homecoming. Most likely, it’s just John Brown being John Brown. Either way, whether captivating listeners with poetic lyrics and simple wisdoms, pontificating from his literary collection, The Book of Rooster, or reinventing covers, John Brown has one thing in mind - Uniting with his audience to create an unforgettable experience. Plowology, his band, is “The Root of it All”. Visit the Artist Roster at www.pearldrum.com for background on his drumming life.
