7/2/2007 - Three Band Pieces Selected for J.W. Pepper's 2007-2008 Editor's Choice
Every year, J.W. Pepper reviews thousands of publications to choose the pieces they deem to be the best of that particular year. This year, three C. Alan band pieces were selected to be part of this collection, the 2007-2008 Editor's Choice. Full recordings of the pieces will be included on CDs in the Pepper Full Recorded Library. Read Pepper's descriptions of each piece below.
Apollo's Chariot by Nathan Daughtrey
You'll want to grab the reins of the nearest chariot when you experience the action of this wonderfully descriptive work. Thundering percussion provides the fuel throughout, even though the parts are well within the playing abilities of this level. Well written and effectively scored, it will have younger groups sounding much more developed and mature.
A Sacred Suite by Brant Karrick
American songs from shaped-note singing books as well as an English hymn make up the movements of this suite. The first movement begins with a fanfare that leads to O God Our Help in Ages Past. The second movement features a Holst-like setting of the hymn Consolation, while the third movement combines True Happiness with How Firm a Foundation in a rollicking 6/8 finale.
The Sky by Gary Gackstatter
This is one part of a larger work based on landscape art of the vast central plains. The prairie sky is wondrous in its expanse and scope, always changing and inspiring. This work is an expression of the many moods and majesty one finds simply by looking upward.
